Vista to Help Dell to Sell More

Dell hopes Vista will improve their sales of laptops that have suffered recently while HP’s revenue increases. Unless Dell comes out with some bells and whistles that differentiate their models from other vendors, it won’t make such a difference as people might not want to shell out more on Vista. I’m sure a lot of people are contended with their XP OS just like me.

MAKER OF of exploding laptops, Michael Dell said that he is banking on Microsoft’s Vista making an improvement in his outfit’s sales. Dell sales have been suffering a bit lately, much to the joy of HP which has been taking business off them. But Michael, who is in Australia, was telling hacks down under that all will be well soon.

Assessment of Vista Kernel Mode Security by Symantec

Symantec has just released a pretty in-depth report on the security of the Windows Vista kernel. This is a detailed technical report that discusses how Vista boots, how PatchGuard and Code Integrity work, as well as a technique on how to bypass them. Sounds interesting and quite a deep subject.

Discount or Free Versions of Windows Vista

Come 2007, you might see a lot of computer vendors or OEMs bundle Vista into their Dual Core PCs, etc as was done with Windows XP. That will be good news for computer users but whether this will apply to users in Asia is another story. Piracy is rampant in that part of the world but freebies and discounts will be a good way for Microsoft to slash piracy statistics over there.

If Microsoft and computer makers offer free or discounted versions of Windows Vista to PC buyers this fall and winter, the way promotions for XP were run in 2001 will offer some clues, said a research analyst.

“Most likely, we will have some sort of promotion at the consumer level,” Mike Sievert, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows client marketing, told CRN. “It’s important that people see value right up until the launch of Vista.”

Five years ago, as Windows XP’s fall debut neared, OEMs began offering either free upgrades to XP for new PC buyers, or charged for a coupon that entitled them to a Windows XP disc. Compaq — prior to its acquisition by Hewlett-Packard — gave away the upgrade to XP, while other OEMS, such as Gateway and Dell, charged handling fees ranging from $15 to $39.

Windows Vista fully compatible with HD DVD

Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, will make its Windows Vista operating system compatible with HD DVD, a high-definition disc format developed by Toshiba Corp.

Microsoft made it clear that Windows Vista will be fully compatible with HD DVD and that it will be capable of supporting the reproduction of HD DVD video. The company showcased the native Vista infrastructure components that are applicable to HD DVD. Specifically, Windows Vista will support the MMC-5 commands, the driver commands for the AACS content protection scheme, as well as the UDF 2.5 file system, although UDF is currently a part of the BD-R file system and not the HD DVD. Vista will also natively support the VC-1 and the MPEG-2 video codecs, as well as the WMA PRO codec for audio.
